In-text Citation

(Author of AI model, Year).

Note:

For the version statement, include the date (as this is how OpenAI is labelling the versions).

ChatGPT is a large language model, and it should be included in square brackets as the descriptor.

ChatGPT-4 is described as a "large multimodal model" -- include this text in the square brackets if this version is being used.

Including ChatGPT Text in Appendix

APA suggests including the exact ChatGPT text cited as an Appendix in your paper, as ChatGPT will create a different response for every chat session so it would be impossible for your reader to recreate the exchange in ChatGPT. For more information on formatting an Appendix, visit the Getting Started tab.

If you are including the text as an Appendix, make sure you refer to it at least once in your in-text citations. For example: (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix for full transcript).
