Your guide to citations and works cited in MLA Style, 9th Edition

Tweet

To cite a tweet, begin with the account holder’s name and their Twitter handle (if Twitter handle is different from account name),  followed by the the entire tweet in quotation marks, and then followed by, Twitter, in italics, followed by the date the tweet was posted. Finally, include a URL to the tweet.

Name [@Username]. "Entire text of the tweet in quotes." Twitter, Day Month Year, URL.

Cicardi, Francesca [@FraCicardi]. "People queueing to get 1kilo of subsidized sugar in Zamalek (Cairo's upper-class area). Can imagine situation in poorer neighborhoods #Egypt." Twitter, 26 Oct. 2016, twitter.com/FraCicardi/status/791259380666757121.

(Author’s Surname OR Account name).

Twitter Profile

To cite a Twitter profile, begin with the account holder’s name and their Twitter handle (if Twitter handle is different from account name), followed by "Twitter Profile". Then, Twitter, in italics, followed by the retrieval date. Finally, include a URL to the page.

Facebook Post

Begin with Author or the account name. In quotations, list the title or caption of the post. If title is not given, write a brief description of the post, but do not place it in quotation marks. Followed by, Facebook, and then add the date posted and URL.

Author Surname, Given Name or Account name. “Title or Caption of the Post” or Description of Post. Facebook, day month year of post, URL.

Facebook Page

Begin with the account name. In quotations, add the title of the page if given. Followed by, Facebook, URL, and access date.

Instagram Photo or Video

Begin with Author and/or [@handle]. In quotations, list the title or caption of the photo. If title is not given, write a brief description of the picture, but do not place it in quotation marks. Followed by, Instagram, and then add the date posted and URL.

Works Cited

Author Surname, Given Name or Account Name [@handle]. Photo Title or Description. Instagram, other contributors (e.g. photographer if different from account holder), day month year of post, URL.
