You can always use the main Newspapers Search, outlined on the front page of this guide, or try using a specialized database. The library subscribes to hundreds of specialized databases, including several that are dedicated to Canadian news and current events (list at left). Below you'll find tips on how to navigate these specialized databases.

Searching in CPI.Q

The Canadian Periodicals Index (CPI.Q) contains hundreds of newspaper articles from the 70s and 80s through the most recent issues. When you click to access CPI.Q, you'll automatically be directed to their Advanced Search page. From here, simply enter your keywords and hit Search.

When your results page comes up, be sure to click News from the top navigation bar (see screenshot below). You can refine your results further using the filters on the right to narrow by Publication Title (name of the newspaper), Publication Date, and more.

Searching in Canadian Newsstream

Similar to CPI.Q, Canadian Newsstream will automatically direct you to their Advanced Search screen. From here you can enter your keywords (each keyword gets its own box). Make sure to select Newspapers from the Source Type filter at the bottom of the page (see screenshot).

When your results display, use the filters on the left to narrow down your results. Date and Publication Title are especially helpful for narrowing down your list of results.

Searching in PressReader

If you just want to read the latest issue of your favourite newspaper, your best bet will be PressReader. PressReader lets you read the full print edition of the paper, complete with photos.

When you click the PressReader link, you'll be directed to the main homepage. To find Canadian newspapers, select Canada from the All countries/regions drop-down, then select Newspapers from under the Publications heading. This will direct you to a page containing all of PressReader's Canadian newspapers. By default, you will be shown the most recent issue. You can also filter your results by province or language using the drop-downs at the top of the page. There are two options for viewing the paper, you can read it exactly as it appears in print, or select Text View to scroll through the issue more easily.
