SIFT: Stop, Investigate, Find, Trace

STOP

When you first come across new information stop and ask yourself if you know where the information came from and what the reputation of the website/publisher is. STOP is also a reminder to slow down!! If you become overwhelmed in your search, stop and refocus on your original question.

INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE

Investigate asks you to consider what you're reading before you start reading it. Who is the author? Do they have an bias or ulterior motives for sharing the information? Conversely, is the person an expert in the field? How do you know? Caulfield explains, "knowing the expertise and agenda of the source is crucial to your interpretation of what they say. Taking sixty seconds to figure out where media is from before reading will help you decide if it is worth your time, and if it is, help you to better understand its significance and trustworthiness." 

FIND BETTER COVERAGE

When trying to determine the trustworthiness or validity of information, it is helpful to explore what other coverage is available on the topic. Caulfield explains, "you want to know if [the information you found] represents a consensus viewpoint, or if it is the subject of much disagreement." Further, "understanding the context and history of a claim will help you better evaluate it and form a starting point for future investigation."

TRACE CLAIMS, QUOTES, AND MEDIA BACK TO THE ORIGINAL CONTEXT

Often times, online content may be stripped of its original context. Trace the claim back to its original context to see whether the issue is fairly represented. You can do this by clicking through any attached links, checking references/citations, consulting fact-checking websites (suggestions at tight), and/or circling back to the original source being discussed. This video explains how to trace a claim back to its original source.
