Black History Month in Canada was officially recognized by the House of Commons in 1995 after members of the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) successfully petitioned for the month to be recognized with the support of the Honorable Jean Augustine, the first Black woman to serve as a federal Member of Parliament (Government of Canada, 2022).
