What is a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement usually appears at the end of the introductory paragraph of an essay. 

The thesis statement summarizes the main argument or conclusion of the paper in a single sentence.

Good thesis statements are:

  1. Concise: Briefly summarize the main point of the paper
  2. Clear: Avoid vague, abstract or overly technical language
  3. Specific: Covers only what is discussed and is supported by evidence presented in the paper
