Scarborough Muslim Association
The history of the Scarborough Muslim Association (SMA) dates back to the 1970s, when a large number of Muslims had migrated and settled in the east part of Toronto which is known as Scarborough. As the Muslim community in 1980s grew in Scarborough and since there was no permanent mosque facility in Scarborough, realizing this need the Muslims in Scarborough realized the need for a formal organization and this led to the formation of the Scarborough Muslim Association (SMA) a non-profit charitable organization in 1981 with the sole purpose of establishing a permanent mosque and Islamic academic school in Scarborough. Today, the SMA's facility can accommodate up to 2,500 worshippers in it's 42,000 sq. ft. location and includes prayer facilities, academic school for K-12, a gym, playground, and funerary facilities
