Self-Governance & Sovereignty

Self-governance, also called self-determination and/or sovereignty, refers to First Peoples' right to govern themselves according to their traditional knowledge systems and the economic, social, and geographic conditions distinct to each nation and/or community.

The Government of Canada "recognizes that Indigenous peoples have an inherent right of self-government guaranteed in section 35 of the Constitution Act1982The Government of Canada's Approach to Implementation of the Inherent Right and the Negotiation of Aboriginal Self-Government was first launched in 1995 to guide self-government negotiations with Indigenous communities" (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, 2020).
