The symbol for π is the Greek letter p, for the perimeter. Pi (π) is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi is an irrational number and is approximately equal to 3.141592653... The date March 14 (3/14) represents the first 3 digits of this interesting number. Up to now, over 100 trillion digits of Pi have been calculated on a computer!
On Tuesday March 14, the Math Drop-In Centre will be hosting activities to celebrate such a joyous day in math history.

Pi was mentioned in an episode of the Simpsons, where Apu demonstrates his amazing memory by memorizing decimal places of pi up to the digit 1, the 40000th digit.
Currently pi has been calculated to 100 trillion decimal places, which took 157 days to compute, and filled 515 TB of memory
Suresh Kumar Sharma from India holds the world record for remembering the value of Pi up to 70 030 digits.
Pi has been used regularly in mathematical sense for more than 250 years.
